Omaha Beach

We made it to Omaha Beach on the eve of the Normandy landings anniversary. It was a really special time to visit this coastline and be able to commemorate the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II.

Today, the usually quiet roads were taken over by old military vehicles. We waved to the veterans and their families driving past and they honked their horns in response.

From Omaha Beach, we wandered up to the impeccable grounds of the cemetery and memorial. So many visitors and locals had come here today - all united by a feeling of reverential respect for the events that happened here 72 years ago.

Normandy Landings

On 6 June 1944, Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing on the Normandy coast of France at dawn.

The men landed under heavy fire, and the shore was covered with mines and obstacles such as wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire.

It took six long days to connect the 80 km stretch of beachheads, including Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword Beach. But in the end, the landing operations began the liberation of German-occupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control.
