Sightseeing in Buenos Aires

When you live in a city, you can get a little too comfortable with enjoying the lifestyle that you forget to see all of the sights.

Autumn is quickly coming to an end in Buenos Aires, so before winter takes hold Danny and I enjoyed a day in the sun exploring the city's landmarks.

Not going to lie - I think we have passed by these places before dozens of times, but today was the first time we really appreciated them properly.

Starting with … the Obelisk.

Or if you want to sound all sexy in Spanish … El Obelisco!

I know this doesn't look like the most exciting architectural monument, but the Obelisk has had its fair share of interesting history.

It's been a rallying point for all kinds of public gatherings, but the best story is that in 2005, it was covered in a gigantic pink condom to commemorate World Aids Day. How's that for a city landmark?

Naturally, we took a photo of ourselves with this famous erection …

And then walked across the road to Teatro Colon - Buenos Aires' beautiful opera house.

Knocked on the door but sadly it was closed that day. Don't worry, we'll be back there soon to watch a show :)

So we wandered down the road.

And reached the National Congress.

An absolutely beautiful building to see at dusk.

And then strolled down Avenida de Mayo, which connects the National Congress with Casa Rosada (the office for the executive and President).

Where I thought we were met by an angry mob of protestors.

Turns out it was actually a parade for Labour Day.

For me, Labour Day is a simply another holiday where office workers enjoy a lazy day off work. But here, they really celebrate the right to work and everybody takes it quite seriously.
