The Acropolis

Kalimera from Athens!

There wasn’t a lot of time for sightseeing in our busy regatta schedule. But if there was one place we had to go see, it was the Acropolis.

Carlo, Pablo and I woke up early* (by student standards that is) for our morning history excursion. Being a history buff, Carlo enlightened us on Ancient Greek architecture and mythology.  On the other hand, I burst into giggles at the building named 'the Erechtheion'.

Even though it was my second time visiting the Acropolis, it hadn't lost its awe. As an Australian, a 200 year old building is impressive to me. As for a building that is 2,500 years old? Mind-blowing.

The Acropolis is the ancient citadel that sits high above the city of Athens.

Most of the site's major buildings were originally constructed in the fifth century BC, the most famous being the Parthenon. Originally a temple for the goddess Athena, the Parthenon turned into a church in the Byzantine period, army headquarters after Ottoman conquest, and later gunpowder storage by the Venetians. And still, it's standing here today for us to admire (with thanks to a little restoration work!).
