Ice Ice Baby

Any other Game of Thrones fans out there?  Because I swear Perito Moreno Glacier looks as if it were The Wall in the north!

After Ushuaia, Danny and I travelled north to a little Patagonian town called El Calafate.  The town is cute, but the real attraction is to see the jaw-dropping Perito Moreno Glacier.

I would love to tell you that the glacier is guarded by the Night's Watch and protects Argentines from wildlings on the other side, but that would be a bit ridiculous (and yet, that would be so cool...).

What I can truthfully tell you is that this gigantic ice formation is absolutely amazing to see close up.

In the morning, we jumped on a boat that cruised around the lake and and drove us right up close to the glacier.

It was chilly and windy, but we were determined to stay on the top deck to admire this big hunk of ice.

75 metres high above Lake Argentino and about twice as deep under the water.

Every few minutes, the strong whistling of wind would be interrupted by a loud cracking noise - the sound of ice falling off the glacier and crashing into the lake.

Afterwards, we sailed back to land to admire the glacier on foot.

There are four tracks with different views of the glacier.

Being eager beavers, we walked along all of the tracks and can confidently boast about seeing Perito Moreno Glacier from every angle imaginable.

Just look at how far that goes into the distance - 30 kilometres long!  And growing day by day.

As for Lake Argentino, it glows a brilliant shade of turquoise.

But honestly, I don't think my words or photos could ever do this place justice.

Wow.  Just wow.

Cannot believe I had never heard of this place before coming to Argentina.   And so glad I had the chance to see this.

What can I say, it's been the ice-ing on the cake for this whirlwind trip to Patagonia!
